the sketchbook project

I’ve signed up to get a sketchbook for the Sketchbook Project 2011 – run by Art House Co-op in Brooklyn. A little scary, but I (virtually) know quite a few people who’re taking part – and anyone can join in – it should be a great project to be part of. My sketchbook hasn’t arrived yet but I think they come quite quickly after you sign up. There are lots of very different themes to choose from and I chose ‘Lines and Grids’ – I thought it might provide inspiration for weaving as well as being fun to explore.
Of course as soon as you start to look there are lines and grids everywhere – these are some from my Flickr photos:
1. lobster pot, 2. bramble leaves turning, 3. patterns and textures at Jolyons, 4. nets at Praia da Vagueira, 5. lines in rock, 6. sculpted by nature, 7. rusty fence, 8. light and waves, 9. fibre and tines, 10. prints in the sand, 11. patterns and textures at Jolyons, 12. netted rock, 13. under a sunlit chair, 14. creel, 15. waves, 16. grass shadows on the sand
I also think there are lots of expressions about lines to play with, e.g. ‘crossing the line’,'line of enquiry’,'taking a hard line’, and probably also some about grids though they don’t spring to mind so readily!

I am scared too having had a major art drowt. We can be scared together 
I’ve started keeping an ideas notebook so I don’t forget the good ideas I have between now and the arrival of the sketchbook. Can’t wait to start now – I chose Beneath the surface

I’m in this too. My title is “This is not a sketchbook”. I thought I might feel a bit less scared by that and it gives me a lot of scope – I hope! That’s a good idea of Carol’s to make a note now of any ideas.

I just signed up, for a red one, oh, how exciting. The most terrible thing that could happen is that you feel you can’t use it because it will be exhibited, though it IS a sketchbook – not a work of art… or?

I went with “beneath the surface” because I thought that lent itself to textiles, but as soon as I see what theme other participants are doing I want to do those instead! Must stick to “beneath” LOL
My sketchbook came. It’s smaller than I thought but has a LOT of pages

I’ve just joined right now and I am anxious and excited at the same time! Mine is FIGURING YOU OUT. This is my first attempt at joining art exhibits and I have no idea how to go about. Thanks for this great tip about collecting images for inspiration!

Love your photos of textures and fibres! I just happen to search for that project and found your site! I also joined the project! Choosed “Figuring you out”… received the sketch book yesterday… trilled and nervous, so many blank pages!! hehehe Happy to see so many participant! Have fun with it!

I chose ‘facing forward’. Now I have to conjure up some ideas!! I’m looking forward to working on it even though I’ve never done this before.
PS. I always have plenty of ideas until I sit down to work on something.
Then its ‘stare off into space time’.

How is your sketchbook going? I have been taking lots of photos of things people forgot around Liverpool, so many odd shoes! But I’m not sure where I’m going from there… xxx

Lines and grids are a great theme – I love finding patterns in nature. As humans, we seem to have a basic need to create order, and patterns tend to happen, even when we are trying to be random.
Would love to see the sketchbook update!
